As COVID19 has eliminated food service produce demand and disrupted revenue stream for farmers, it has increased the amount of food waste exponentially. In many cases, the food being wasted could have gone to the most vulnerable among us through recovery and distribution programs.
We've put together this page to help farmers protect their bottom line as much as possible. We will continue to update this page as we become aware of more resources. Here's what we have to offer:

Guide to Donating Produce
How to donate your fresh produce
- Produce needs 5 days of shelf life to be donated
- Food Banks will do their own logistic. You do not need to transport the donation yourself.
- Connect with the Farm to Family program to see if they can help cover a picking or packing fee
Benefits for you and your farm
Get tax credits for your donated produce
Institutions that donate food can take advantage of tax incentives, including the general federal tax deduction and enhanced federal tax deduction for food donation. At the state level, CA AB 152 bill allows certain growers to claim a 10-15% state tax credit on the wholesale value of donated fresh fruits and vegetables.
You are protected as a food donor
Organizations that donate food are well-protected by laws designed to provide immunity from liability related to food donations. At the federal level, the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act provides comprehensive protection for those providing or receiving donated food, so long as the food is donated to a nonprofit that distributes food to the needy, the ultimate recipient is not charged for the food, and the donations are made in good faith and meet food safety standards imposed by law. Some states provide even more protection.
